Treating Musculoskeletal Injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries can affect everyone – the young and old as well as weekend warriors and elite athletes. But receiving the right care and treatment can help you get back to your daily activities faster.

These types of injuries are often related to overuse. Shoulder, knee and hip aches and pains are some of the most common patient complaints and may result from conditions including tendonitis, bursitis or an acute injury, such as a ligament tear or fracture.

Watch for these symptoms that may indicate a musculoskeletal injury:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Weakness
  • Reduced range of motion

Sometimes a combination of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) is enough to help symptoms improve. But if pain is persistent or severe, or you experience weakness with swelling or bruising, it’s time to seek medical attention.

Most health insurance plans do not require you to get a referral to see a physiatrist or sports medicine physician. These specialists help patients improve function without surgery. Using ultrasound imaging, sports medicine physicians are able to give patients an accurate diagnosis and provide treatments, including nutrition consultation, physical therapy, bracing, medication or advanced regenerative injections.

Edward-Elmhurst Health takes a team approach to provide a variety of treatments for musculoskeletal injuries. Our sports medicine physicians can provide in-office diagnosis with advanced treatment options. If surgery is necessary, we can provide a referral to one of our orthopedic specialists for further care.
